Floral Color-Blocked Syrah Skirt for Perfect Pattern Parcel #6

Well folks, it's about that time again.  Perfect Pattern Parcel time.

I chose to sew up the Syrah Skirt, and as you can see, I love it!! 

The skirt has lots of options, including a maxi that I want to make once spring rolls around, but since it is still relatively warm around here right now, I decided to go with a shorter length.  I know, I know, this would be better with booties, and I've made a mental note to get some!  But for now this still seems just right. 

In addition to different lengths options and different waist options, there are also different ways to sew up your skirt for different looks.  I chose to make mine with four panels and to color block the center panels in the front and back with this bright neon floral fabric that I've been hanging onto for just the right thing.  I brought this home at the start of summer and my sister was begging me to make it into a kimono for her.  But even though it is bright and cute, it is a thick and heavy knit that would be a little much to wear on a hot and sunny day.  But as a skirt on a slightly warm autumn day?  It's perfect.

I cut the gray side panels out a little wider to give it a slight swingy shape, and topstitched the edges of the panels to stiffen it up slightly and help keep it's shape.  

As for the rise, the pattern is made to sit a few inches below your natural waist, but I changed that up a little bit.  I cut the waistband piece a little smaller than my size so that it would sit higher on my waist BUT I kept the skirt size the same.  This gave me the high waisted effect that I was going for, but kept the skirt itself (including the top portion) a little wider so that it just dusts across my stomach and hips without clinging to anything

**If you decide to do this as well, I would highly recommend making a muslin of the waistband first, and trying it on before you attach it to your skirt.  I did this, and my first waistband I could get onto my body and kept everything very sucked in in a Spanx sort of way.  But then I couldn't get it off.  My hips were like, "Look, I gave you two kids, so you're going to have to come up with another solution for removing that band."  I finally just cut it off right before panic set in.  So make a muslin and you'll be golden. :) **

It was so cute and twirly that Hannah wanted to join in as well.  She immediately put on her own dress with a floral bottom, her Princess Sofia high heels, and was ready to spin!

So what do you think?  Not too shabby, right?  I love it.

Also I must give props to my husband for being a good sport and taking these photos for me.  True, there are 30 or so shots on my camera where I am missing my feet, but after that there are a few more where I have them again.

And to this monkey who danced in the wings until the camera was on her, the left us with a bow.
